28 February, 2013 - New Zealand King Salmon on Thursday announced the Environmental Protection Agency has given the green light to four new salmon farms.

The farms will cover six surface hectares.

The farms will allow the company to double production to 15,000 metric tons (MT) over the coming years at an estimated NZD 60 million annually in export income and ultimately adding new jobs to the region.

“We will also gather valuable scientific knowledge so the Marlborough Sounds can be better managed as a multiuse area. At no cost to the ratepayer we will be funding a comprehensive research program of nitrogen levels from all sources, not just fish farms,” said Grant Rosewarne, CEO. “That research will establish baseline levels of nitrogen in the Sounds and their sources to support out contention that nitrogen levels from fish farms have little effect on the environment.”
