Gulf seafood worker relief program set up

By SeafoodSource staff
10 June, 2010 - Kevin Voisin, VP of marketing for Motivatit Seafoods in Houma, La., this week announced the formation of the Horizon Relief Corp. to help fishermen and seafood workers cope with the financial and emotional consequences of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The foundation will collect donations and distribute the money to out-of-work fishermen and seafood workers. Often government and corporate programs overlook the people who need help the most, said Voisin, an eighth generation oysterman.

“I … thought about the 200 or more families that relied on [the Motivatit processing plant] to put groceries on the table,” said Voisin. “They aren’t employees, they’re lifelong friends and family. I couldn’t just sit and wait anymore.

“We can’t trust the government or BP to make this right — it’s going to take people helping people,” he added.

For donors who give USD 1,000, Horizon Relief will offer “limited edition” glass bottles of oily seawater from the spill site. “These bottles represent the reclamation of the lives of the people most impacted by the disaster — the seafood laborer,” said Voisin.

Donations can be made through the Horizon Relief Web site.
