FDA urged to improve imported seafood oversight

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is failing to ensure the safety of imported seafood and monitor the use of unapproved drugs in aquaculture, according to a new Government Accountability Office report. The GAO also called the agency’s seafood-sampling program “limited” and “ineffective.”

Japanese fishermen to be compensated

Japanese fishermen whose catch has been affected by the release of radioactive particles from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant should receive compensation, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said on Wednesday. Tokyo Electric Power Co. will estimate the amounts to be paid in consultation with the government.

Radioactive iodine found in some Japanese fish

Harmful levels of radioactive iodine have been detected in a batch of sand lance caught off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture, which is adjacent to Fukushima Prefecture. As a result, Japan has set a legal limit for radioactive levels in seafood of 2,000 becquerels per kilogram, the same limit adopted for vegetables.
