Japanese fishermen to be compensated

Japanese fishermen whose catch has been affected by the release of radioactive particles from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant should receive compensation, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said on Wednesday. Tokyo Electric Power Co. will estimate the amounts to be paid in consultation with the government.

Radioactive iodine found in some Japanese fish

Harmful levels of radioactive iodine have been detected in a batch of sand lance caught off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture, which is adjacent to Fukushima Prefecture. As a result, Japan has set a legal limit for radioactive levels in seafood of 2,000 becquerels per kilogram, the same limit adopted for vegetables.

B.C.: Eat Canadian-caught albacore ‘freely’

British Columbia is now advising its residents to eat Canadian-caught albacore tuna “freely.” Previously, the province’s Ministry of Health and Centre of Disease Control urged consumers to limit their intake of albacore tuna due to the health risks associated with the neurotoxin methylmercury.

Study: Omega-3s prevent obesity-related disease

A new study of Yup’ik Eskimos in Alaska, who on average consume 20 times more omega-3 fatty acids from fish than the rest of the U.S. population, suggests that a high intake of these fats helps prevent obesity-related chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
