Shrimp prices in Australia are set to soar following the government’s decision to place an indefinite ban on imports of the frozen crustacean following the outbreak of the devastating white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) at shrimp farms in Queensland.
A reduction in the supply will drive up wholesale and consumer prices accordingly, according to local traders, but much depends on the length of the ban and the volumes already stockpiled in the country.
