Eco-friendly bags
Carroll Manufacturing and Sales introduces two eco-friendly products. Flavorseal BGB-90 Bone Guard Shrink Bags advanced performance, high-abuse bone guard material is better for the environment than traditional PVdC barrier shrink bags because of its high-grade, chlorine-free resin formulation. The proprietary formula is not only "green," but strong enough to provide complete puncture protection - from edge to edge - without requiring labor-intensive patches, soaker pads, bone discs or other stopgap measures. The bags resist abuse without compromising essential shrink properties. Barrier properties are better than those of conventional bone-in meat packaging, thus extending product shelf life. The bags reduce leak rates and the number of re-packs needed. These features can bring substantial improvements to the processor's bottom line, saving labor and the cost of patches and pads. BGB-90 Bone Guard Shrink Bags are printable with brand logos, cooking directions and other information. The bags can be heat-sealed or clipped to accommodate any retail or foodservice application. Flavorseal Netting with Ecocycle™ Technology is a safe, economical and earth-friendly alternative to plastic produce netting. To address increasing environmental concerns regarding single-use plastic packages, the new netting is programmed to have a reduced lifetime compared to standard plastic netting. It is recyclable, non-toxic, and harmless to humans, animals and plant life, leaving no harmful residues in the environment. The netting provides consumers with the same useful life as conventional plastic netting with no loss in properties, but then degrades faster after disposal. Costs are similar to conventional plastic netting. Ecocycle Technology complies with all U.S. Food and Drug Administration food contact regulations. The netting can reduce total packaging weight and improve sustainability measures.

Stand-up display
WeighPack Systems has developed controlled atmosphere packaging (CAP) in a stand-up bag to extend product freshness. CAP removes air from within a package, and once the bag has been filled with product, the air in the package is replaced with an inert air (often nitrogen and CO2) that suspends product deterioration in a safe and natural way before the bag is sealed. The key to successful product freshness is maintaining the residual oxygen level in the bag between 0 and 2 percent, depending on the type of product. Certain products like nuts, coffee, spices, snacks and chocolates tend to lose flavor, texture and color over time. By adding CAP to the product package, the product's shelf life can be extended tenfold. Given that oxygen is the catalyst of this deterioration, gas flushing alone is not the solution since this process is not consistent. Residual amounts of oxygen will vary from bag to bag, therefore the most dependable solution is to vacuum the contents of the bag and gas flush prior to sealing. The main benefit of using CAP during the packaging process is a significant reduction in product returns from the retailer due to customer dissatisfaction. After months of design, prototyping and trials, the SwiftyTM Bagger 3600 and 1200 can be fitted with a CAP station that assures a controlled atmosphere. A unique feature of this station is that it can either gas flush or vacuum seal the bag or do both. For more information, contact Weighpack at (514) 422-0808, ext. 271, or visit www.weighpack.com.
