After celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey belayed his interest in potentially opening a fish and chips restaurant in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.A., interest in the traditional U.K. comfort food skyrocketed.

Nevertheless, SeafoodSource contributing editor Nicki Holmyard wasn’t convinced that any other locale could relate to the dish quite as passionately as its U.K. fans.

“It’s doubtful that other countries will ever celebrate fish and chips with the same fervor as the UK, which even has a National Fish & Chip Day to encourage more people to enjoy the nation’s favorite supper,” Holmyard wrote.

Indeed, consumers in the country eat 276 million fish and chip meals on average every year, with a value of GBP 1.2 billion (USD 1.7 billion). Moreover, there are over 10,500 fish and chip shops and restaurants throughout the UK, and in the heyday of the dish in the 1930s, 35,000 shops were up and running.
