Global Blue Technology facilities heavily damaged by Hurricane Harvey

Rockport, Texas-based Global Blue Technologies’ shrimp production facilities and its Sea Products Development hatchery suffered significant damage during Hurricane Harvey, which swept through the state from 25 August through 30 August.

First responders surveying the hurricane’s destruction in Rockport estimate that between 30 and 40 percent of the town’s homes and businesses were totally destroyed, with an equal percentage rendered structurally uninhabitable, according to Global Blue, which produces premium Pacific white shrimp under the Copano Blues brand. Sustainable Sea Products International is the marketing arm of Global Blue, and is also based in Rockport.

All of Global Blue’s employees are safe, “and they have already begun the hard work of clearing debris and rebuilding our hard-hit facilities,” the company said in a statement provided to SeafoodSource.

“It will take weeks and even a few months for the innovative aquaculture campus to resume operations," the company said. "Like Rockport and neighboring cities and towns including Houston and Galveston, Global Blue Technologies and Sea Products Development may have suffered significant damage, but their resolve to rebuild and redefine shrimp aquaculture – both in terms of premium quality shrimp produced and extraordinarily robust brood and seed stock for farms worldwide – is undiminished."

Within three days of the storm’s passing beyond the Rockport area, Global Blue and Sea Products Development took the first steps in their rebuilding process. The company was fortunate in that its pure lines survived in a bio-secure building and the facility did not suffer from storm surge or flooding.

Principals of each company said that Global Blue Technologies and Sea Products Development will emerge from the natural disaster “stronger, better and more successful than ever before.”

“This is our pledge.  It’s a promise we intend to keep,” the statement said.

The statement said customers with questions or concerns should contact Stephen White, the company’s director of logistics and operational finance, at [email protected]
