GlobalGAP CEO Kristian Moeller on aquaculture certification, harmonization

GlobalGap_homepage.jpgWhat differentiates GlobalGAP from other aquaculture standards?

We are a global supply chain partnership of farmers, their organizations, traders, processors and retailers that have come together to provide an economic incentive for farmers around the world to adopt practices for food safety, social and environmental sustainability as well as animal welfare.

To implement efficient and effective concepts, the partners strive for cost-reduction approaches. And this is the purpose not only for aquaculture, but for all products produced on farms, including crops and livestock.

As a result, maybe the biggest difference to all other standards in the seafood sector is our strong commitment to harmonizing standards. We were founded in the 1990s to do exactly that. We have developed our own benchmarking process that works successfully in the crops and livestock sector and has allowed farmers around the world to apply only a single certification standard and, yet, supply multiple markets. Part of our effort is to be as transparent as possible and strive constantly to reduce any duplication. We can only achieve this goal by staying business-to-business (no consumer label) and offering collaboration with other standards. We have already offered cooperation to each of the leading and known standards in the aquaculture sector. So far, Friend of the Sea (FOS) has fully taken up our offer, and farmers now enjoy a single audit to be certified for both standards, GlobalGAP and FOS.
