Acme Smoked Fish Co-Chairman Eric Caslow has died, the company said in a press release issued 18 February. The company did not announce the cause of death.

Along with his brother, Robert Caslow, who remains company co-chairman, Eric Caslow was the third generation of his family to run the Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.-based fish smoker, which was founded in 1906 and has grown into one of the largest fish-smoking companies in the United States.

“We will always be inspired by Eric’s passion,” Acme Smoked Fish President Eduardo Carbajosa said.  “He did what he loved, and he encouraged so many of us at Acme and throughout the industry.”

Caslow was involved with the National Fisheries Institute and served as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Advisory Council on Small Business and Agriculture.

Caslow started working at Acme in 1972 and was appointed president in 1992.

“Over his many decades in the industry, Eric cultivated a number of wonderful relationships as a fish buyer. He was as well-respected by vendors worldwide for his fairness and integrity as he was committed to seeking out only the highest-quality raw material,” the company said. “He became involved in working groups starting in the [19]80’s, which helped shape industry regulations.”

Even as he moved into his co-chairman role several years ago, Caslow continued to be closely involved in the company’s operations, Acme said in its release.

“He had a larger-than-life presence and loved to walk through the factory early in the morning to examine fish and every detail that impacted its quality,” it said.

Eric’s son, David Caslow, and Robert Caslow’s son, Adam Caslow, continue to operate the company as a family-run operation, serving as co-CEOs, “following in both of their father’s footsteps in running the business together,” Acme said.
