Seafood2030 and SeafoodSource will be hosting a virtual event on 9 and 10 September highlighting the evolving relationship between the seafood industry and governments on the sustainability front.
The Seafood2030 Virtual Sustainability Forum will look at real-world examples where better alignment of industry and government efforts can improve the sustainability, social impacts, and economic viability of fisheries, event organizers said. It will also focus on identifying opportunities to better align sustainability efforts “to improve the global management of seafood and seafood supply-chains.”
Attendees can expect to learn about key initiatives where industry and governments are driving better management and practices in seafood; to engage with organizations working on these initiatives through a virtual exhibit hall; to share their voice in a discussion that will shape how stakeholders collaborate in the future; and to experience a global program that includes select sessions in Japanese, according to Seafood2030.
Significant investments have been made by the seafood industry to address environmental and social impacts through certification, fishery improvement projects, supply-chain commitments, and pre-competitive collaborations. These investments have provided significant return to seafood companies, the seafood industry, and the brand “seafood” globally. At the same time, investments in better management by governments and international bodies have had very clear and definable environmental, social, and economic returns.
Leveraging the work done by industry and aligning government management with industry efforts is a clear opportunity to advance sustainability in seafood – a theme the virtual forum aims to investigate through its two-day programming. Four areas where alignment efforts are underway will be touched upon during the event, including: barriers to certification; codifying best practices in FIPs; traceability and transparency; addressing social issues and reducing risk in supply chains.
