10 major US seafood retailers who made the Greenpeace grade

Coming in with a 5.98 score overall, this Midwest grocer has leveled out a bit after taking home the “Most Improved Retailer” distinction for last year’s report. Greenpeace attributed the slow-down to a plateau of progress regarding sustainable tuna sourcing and a high Red List quota – Meijer sells 11 out of the 22 species on Greenpeace’s Red List, including monkfish and Alaska pollock.

“The retailer made gains in some important areas by adding scientific name and MSC/BAP certification to all of its private label products. Meijer is working on updates to its website and considering ways to best communicate seafood sustainability to its customers. Greenpeace encourages Meijer to increase transparency on these initiatives and take leadership by developing a sustainable canned tuna policy, advocating for Bering Sea Canyons protection, and supporting important initiatives to confront IUU fishing and human rights abuses in the seafood industry, starting with its own supply chain,” Greenpeace wrote.
