Cornish has seen a number of new types of sea snacks come on the market in the past year or more, including kelp jerky and crispy salmon skin.

"Americans are seeking out  healthy, high-protein snacks because they tend to be portable foods that will keep them satiated for longer," said Cornish. "Easy, go-to tasty snacks that marry convenience with health, such as salmon jerky or seaweed chips are great lean-protein options to keep stashed in your desk or bag for when hunger strikes."

Seaweed-based snacks as well as grab-and-go tuna pouches will continue to sell well, Ruhs predicts, thanks to their convenience and nutritional benefits.

“Seaweed is a virtuous snack. There are pretty much no calories and you are getting tons of minerals," Ruhs said. "It’s almost like an edible vitamin.”
