Harvest Select acquires Steel City Seafood

Harvest Select, a Northport, Alabama, U.S.A.-based seafood company primarily involved in the production of catfish, has acquired Birmingham, Alabama-based Steel City Seafood.

The purchase was made to allow Harvest Select to expand its product offerings, as Steel City Seafood offers oysters, shrimp, crab and a variety of fish, including grouper and snapper, all sourced from the Gulf of Mexico, the company said in a press release.

“The purchase of Steel City will allow us the ability to source and purchase the finest and freshest domestic Gulf seafood,” Harvest Select Vice President of Sales Michael Locascio said. “It will also position Harvest Select to be a leading supplier of our sustainable U.S. farm-raised catfish right in our own backyard.”

Harvest Select currently produces more than 750,000 pounds of catfish weekly out of its Uniontown, Alabama facilities. The company said it would use its existing supply chain, including trucking routes and backhauls, to facilitate supply and distribution of larger shipments to its current customers and “open the doors for growth to include new customers.”

“We have been researching and planning for this opportunity for years. The timing is ideal for Harvest Select,” Harvest Select President Randy Rhodes said. “We look forward to further promoting American catfish and expanding our reach into our Alabama Gulf seafood.”

The company also announced it will launch an e-commerce site where both retailers and consumers can purchase its catfish and value-added products.

“This site will quickly expand to include Southern Gulf products sourced through Steel City Seafood,” the company said.
