Themes in China to follow in Year of the Lamb (or Goat)

China’s out-of-home dining spend will pick up, a boon to sales of value seafood species: After several years in the doldrums due to the government’s austerity campaign against officialdom waste, China’s catering sector picked up in 2014 with revenue of CNY 2.786 trillion (USD 445.5 billion; EUR 396.05 billion), representing a 9.7 percent rise over 2013, according to data from the China Cuisine Association (CCA). The sector will report double-digit growth this year, predicted Jiang Junxian, head of the CCA, who bases his optimism for growth on the expansion of restaurant chains and convenience retailers (who serve hot meals) into the country’s hinterlands. Using lower-priced seafood like cod, tilapia, croaker, perch, shrimp and surimi, these chains have replaced luxury restaurant chains as the new drivers of growth in revenues, according to the CCA boss.
