Top 5 SeafoodSource stories of 2019 so far – US edition

We’ve reached the halfway point of 2019 and already, the U.S. seafood industry has undergone immense change.

Back in January, the initial results of the Food Marketing Institute’s first-ever Power of Seafood survey revealed that while many Americans aren’t eating seafood very often, there are large segments of U.S. consumers who love it and are buying more of it.

March brought over 22,150 seafood industry professionals to Seafood Expo North America and Seafood Processing North America in Boston, Massachusetts, where two new products took home top honors at the Seafood Excellence Awards: St. James Smokehouse’s Saint Pure Salmon won Best New Retail Product, and East Coast Seafood earned the Best New Foodservice Product title for its Lobster Macaroni & Cheese Bites.

April saw former lawyer Markos Scheer, who left litigation behind for mariculture in Alaska in 2017, secure a 127-acre lease to build a kelp and shellfish farm in Doyle Bay. One month later, in May, Gloucester, Massachusetts, U.S.A.-based seafood processor National Fish and Seafood closed its doors after “facing too many legacy issues,” only to see them open again weeks under new ownership and a new name: Atlantic Fish & Seafood.

These are just a handful of topics that, according to SeafoodSource analytics, have captured the attentions of the seafood industry so far this year. In celebration of the Independence Day holiday (4 July) in the United States, the editorial team presents for you the top five most popular U.S.-focused headlines seen on SeafoodSource to date in 2019.
