ATLANTIC CATFISH (ANARCHICHAS LUPUS)

Atlantic catfish are found all around Iceland, typically around the West Fjords. They live in the sandy bottoms of the water 40-200 metres deep and have very strong teeth and jaws in order to crush and eat shellfish and echinoderms like starfish and sea urchins.

ATLANTIC COD (GADUS MORHUA)

Atlantic cod dominate the waters around Iceland and are the most important fish in the Icelandic diet and economy.

ATLANTIC HERRING (CLUPEA HARENGUS)

Herring are caught seasonally in Iceland, mainly from October to January, and are the most abundant fish in the North Atlantic. They typically measure between 30 and 40 cm lengthwise.

ATLANTIC MACKEREL (SCOMBER SCOMBRUS)

Mackerel are streamlined and fast swimming fish. They grow rapidly as well, doubling in size between infancy and the age of two or three. The average size for adults is between 35 and 45 cm long. The stock that is caught in Icelandic waters comes by way of the North Sea.

GOLDEN REDFISH (SEBASTES MARINUS)

The golden redfish is one of the most common redfish found in Icelandic waters and one of the most commercially important as well.

HADDOCK (MELANOGRAMMUS AEGLEFINUS)

Haddock is a large codfish closely related to the saithe fish. Haddock grow very fast in their first two years and then maintain an average size of about 50-65 cm long.

ICELANDIC SCALLOPS (CHLAMYS ISLANDICA)

Icelandic scallops can be found all around Iceland but are primarily take from the western and northwestern fjords region.

LUMPFISH (CYCLOPTERUS LUMPUS)

Lumpfish are thick and somewhat ball-shaped. Females reach about 40 cm long and males are usually a bit smaller than that. They are found all around the waters of Iceland but in highest concentrations in the colder waters in the north and east of the country.

LUMPFISH CAVIAR (CYCLOPTERUS LUMPUS)

Lumpfish caviar is made from the roe of the lumpfish. Lumpfish are found in the North Atlantic and lumpfish caviar typically comes from Iceland. The largest recorded female lumpfish was found in Icelandic waters, weighing in at 9.6 kg and bearing 4 kg of roe.

SAITHE (POLLACHIUS VIRENS)

Saithe is a slightly larger codfish than the haddock, usually between 70 and 110 cm long. Saithe are mainly caught off of the south and southwest coasts of Iceland.
