World’s first organic land-based salmon farm scores ASC approval

Polish company Jurassic Salmon has become the first land-based salmon farm to earn certification from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).

Jurassic Salmon, which opened in 2013, is considered to be the world’s first organic Atlantic salmon farm as it uses thermal water from 150 million years ago, according to the company.

“We have a number of customers interested in ASC-certified fish and we feel being certified will be of benefit to us,” said Michal Kowalski, Jurassic Salmon’s production manager.

Auditors from aquaculture and fisheries certification firm Acoura conducted the assessment for the organic fish farm. Martin Gill, Acoura Marine’s managing director, noted that with the increased desire for ASC certification seen from retailers and processors, Jurassic Salmon’s newfound sustainability approval will likely up its business.
