New tuna, basa plans for Chinese processing giant

One of China’s most ambitious seafood conglomerates is trading on opportunities at both ends of the market, with company executives recently receiving visits from Japan’s tuna giant and a leading Vietnamese producer of basa (also known as pangasius).

Zhejiang Ocean Family (also known as Dayang Shi Jia) has launched a new low-temperature tuna processing project with Mitsubishi at its subsidiary, Ningbo Feng Sheng Foodstuffs Co. The firm has a long-standing processing deal with the Japanese conglomerate to process and distribute the latter’s seafood for the Chinese market, where demand for sushi-style cuisine continues to grow rapidly.

“We have invested in the most sophisticated technology and equipment…we prioritize R&D and development of new products in the tuna sector,” Ocean Family Vice General Manager Zong Yue Xiang said.

Meanwhile, general manager of well-known Vietnamese basa producer Vinh Hoah Co, Truong Thi Le Khanh, was at the Ocean Family offices this week to discuss “how to develop the basa market in China” and how to “further cooperation” with Ocean Family which has processing, distribution as well as overseas fishing operations.
