Merger of squid roundtables aims to simplify sustainability

Two squid Supply Chain Roundtables (SRs) involving more than 20 squid fisheries worldwide are banding together, the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) announced.

The merging of the squid SRs will help “to pave the way toward a more sustainable global squid industry,” according to the parties involved. The SRs, which cover squid production in Southeast Asia and South America, were joined together following fruitful discussions this past week during Seafood Expo North America 2017, held in Boston, Massachusetts from 19 to 21 March.

Industrial stakeholders will be able to more easily monitor and assess the progress of various squid fishery improvement projects around the world as a result of the SRs combining.

“Globally, squid fisheries share a lot of challenges,” said Sam Grimley, SFP’s director of buyer engagement strategic initiatives, who coordinated the meeting.

The united SRs, which are industry-led and serve to oversee the progress of fishery improvement projects (FIPs) and/or aquaculture improvement projects (AIPs), will make managing global squid FIPs much easier, said Stefano Pagliai, director of procurement at PanaPesca, based in Pembroke, Massachusetts.

“For us, it really makes sense to have the global picture,” Pagliai added.

More than 20 companies are involved in the merger.
