Antibiotic use in salmon farming soars to 9-year high for Chile

In 2015, the Chilean salmon aquaculture industry utilized antibiotics in its operations at the highest rate seen over the last nine years, according to the latest data from Chile’s National Service of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sernapesca).

A combined total of 557 metric tons of antibiotics was employed by Chilean salmon farmers last year, reported La Tercera, with 660 grams of antibiotic used to produce one metric ton of salmon. Comparatively, in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, approximately 206, 337, 450 and 563 metric tons of antibiotics, respectively, were used.

Back in 2007, the country’s salmon producers implemented 640 grams per metric ton of salmon – the highest amount recorded until 2015’s results.
