Scientists in Chile are working on new biotechnology they say may be able to replace traditional antibiotics in seafood farming.
According to an aquaculture industry website, researchers at the University of Valparaiso are working on a marine bacteria that can slow the spread of certain salmon pathogens.
The technology, in the works for the past eight years, now has a patent and is ready to be applied directly into the manufacturing process of fish feed.
Chile has come under fire recently for what critics called excessive use of antibiotics to control Salmon Rickettsial Syndrome (SRS). The new technology, according to the researchers, is harmless to humans and animals.
