U.S. retailer to speak at sustainable seafood farming seminar

One of America’s biggest retailers will be joining the speakers at a seminar on the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA)’s Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification program in Chile later this month.

Robert Fields, senior merchandise director of fresh meat, seafood and deli for Sam’s Club, a division of Walmart, will be joining the 28 July one-day seminar.

According to the GAA, Fields will discuss the American market for Chilean seafood products, and cover the push for what the GAA calls “four-star” BAP status, meaning products that come from processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills that are all BAP-certified as sustainable.

The seminar will focus on the market value of BAP-certified seafood, but will also cover issues such as the use of antibiotics in aquaculture. Chile has taken strong criticism during the past year over excessive use of antibiotics in salmon farms to control Salmon Rickettsial Syndrome (SRS).
