Commission proposes 2015 Black Sea quotas

The European Commission is proposing a cut to the annual Black Sea EU quota for turbot by 74 metric tons (MT).

The commission proposed the 15 percent cut in its overall proposal for fishing guidelines for 2015 for the region. The EU quota for sprat, according to the proposal, would not change, remaining at 11,475 MT.

The proposal will only affect two of the EU member states, Bulgaria and Romania. Both nations would evenly split the turbot quota, while sprat would be split 70 and 30 percent in favor of Bulgaria.

The commission is also looking to build on a management plan first created last year for the turbot fishery.

“The work on establishing a management plan for turbot in the region will continue in 2015,” the commission wrote in a statement.

EU ministers will discuss the commission’s new proposal at the fisheries council meeting later this month.
