NZ rock lobster fishery gets FoS renewal

A New Zealand rock lobster fishery has been confirmed compliant with criteria for Friend of the Sea’s sustainable fishing certification, earning renewal of its current certification.

CRAMAC5, a fishery association that includes rock lobster quota share owners, processors, exporters and fishermen working under Management Area Council guidelines in a rock lobster fishing area known as CRA5, has received the designation after a renewal audit.

The fishery’s lobster potting has minimal bycatch and a low impact on the seabed, Friend of the Sea said. The organization also noted the fishery uses no banned fishing gears or methods, chemical substances or explosives.

CRAMAC5 also complies with New Zealand government programs for monitoring and control of the fishery.
