Study gearing up on re-use of fish waste

A multi-industry initiative is about to get under way in Europe to study whether it is feasible to collect fish waste generated by farms for other uses.

The project, titled BiFFiO, will test the efficiency of small-scale anaerobic digesters for turning fish and cattle waste into biogas and fertilizer for use in the land-based agriculture sector.

The project, funded by the European Union, includes a prototype digester system at the Wood Park dairy farm, part of the U.K.’s University of Liverpool School of Veterinary Science. The university is partnering with the Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organization and the British Trout Association.

“We have known for some time that fish waste is a valuable resource with real commercial value and this multinational collaborative trial will point us in the best direction to unlock this potential,” said Andy Smith with the British Trout Association.

Once started, the project will study the efficiency of the system over a 14-month period finishing by the end of 2016.
