World’s first electric fishing vessel goes to work next month

A Norwegian fishing company has become the world’s first to order a fishing vessel that runs completely on electric power.

Øra has ordered a vessel from Norwegian boatbuilder Selfa Arctic, according to media reports. The vessel, model Selfa Elmax 1099, will be named the Karoline.

The vessel will run off a 195kW battery pack, which will drive an electric motor for propulsion. The boat is expected to produce zero carbon dioxide emissions, and will run more quietly and with fewer vibrations than a traditional fishing vessel.

The price of the vessel was not disclosed. Media reports indicate the vessel was in testing this month, and due to enter service in September.
