Skepticism over the quality of China’s food quality system will likely be heightened following the release of data from one of China’s leading fisheries trading and production hubs.
The Qingdao Ocean and Fisheries Bureau claims a 100 percent clearance rate for 648 batches of seafood it tested in the first nine months of 2016. The products were tested for heavy metals as well as chloramphenicol and polychlorinated biphenyl.
“The quality of local aquaculture products continues to be maintained at a relatively high standard,” according to the bureau.
Food safety transgressions, however, remain a constant concern for Chinese consumers with frequent reports seafood being sold in local markets tainted with high levels of antibiotics and with chemical glazing used to improve its appearance.
