Fishery Improvement Projects Address New Challenges on the Water and in the Supply Chain – But Face Novel Obstacles in the Marketplace

Fishery improvement projects (FIPs) have become an effective way for the seafood industry to improve the management and sustainability of fisheries that are difficult to address through traditional levers such as national management, certification, and intergovernmental treaties and organizations. This issue brief looks at trends in FIPs that reflect greater industry leadership, efforts that are designed to engage new geographies and issues, and new models of engagement to address systemic challenges in seafood. These improvements in the FIP approach have significantly increased the reach and impact of these projects, but have created new challenges in the marketplace – another area detailed in this download.
