Centering fairness and equity in seafood sustainability initiatives: research and recommendations for improvement
Information:
Description:
Bringing together findings from multiple research initiatives led by WWF, Conservation International, CEA Consulting, FishChoice, and Causal Design, this webinar examines how voluntary sustainability standards (such as certifications and Fishery Improvement Projects) affect social equity in diverse fishing communities with key findings and recommendations regarding buyer engagement. While these market-based approaches have proliferated over the past decade with a focus on environmental outcomes, questions remain about where, and to whom, the costs and benefits of participation accrue. Drawing from case studies from small-scale fisheries in South, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, we will share insights on how people across these value chains perceive and engage in sustainability initiatives, their common challenges, and conditions for success. The webinar will provide recommendations for seafood stakeholders and supply chain actors on how to advance equitable outcomes for fishing communities at local, regional, and international scales.
