The Next Step in Responsible Seafood Supply Chains: ASC’s Feed Standard and Verifiable Ingredient Sourcing for Aqua Feed
Information:
Description:
A major challenge for the seafood industry moving forward will be responsible ingredient sourcing for aqua feed. As concerns regarding raw material sourcing for aquaculture feed continue to grow, farms and feed mills increasingly need sustainable sources of raw material. In recent times, there has been a rise in demand for raw fish material (particularly when processed into fishmeal and fish oil) which is crucial for aquaculture feed because it provides a highly concentrated and well-balanced source of essential nutrients like protein, essential amino acids, and fatty acids (especially omega-3s) that are naturally required by most fish species for optimal growth and health. To address these issues, ASC has introduced an aqua feed standard which companies will need to comply with by October 31, 2025. SCS Global Services was involved in the piloting of the standard and certified the first feed mill against the ASC Feed Standard in 2024. SCS and BioMar will discuss the potential value to seafood supply chains of the ASC Feed Standard.
