European Parliament fisheries chief hosts talk by Ray Hilborn in Brussels

Alain Cadec, the president of the Fisheries Committee of the European Parliament, will host a conference on fisheries sustainability with U.S. researcher Ray Hilborn.

The conference, titled “Sustainability of Fisheries: ‘Myths and Reality’" will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 27 April at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, and is scheduled as part of the events around Seafood Expo Global/Seafood Processing Global, taking place 26 to 28 April in the Belgian capital.

Hilborn is professor of aquatic and fishery science at the University of Washington. He is a noted expert in marine natural resource management and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in conservation, quantitative population dynamics and risk analysis. He is the co-author of “Quantitative Fisheries Stock Assessment” and “The Ecological Detective: Confronting Models with Data” and has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles.

In addition, Hilborn has served on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals including the board of reviewing editors of Science magazine. He has been a member of the ocean studies board of the National Research Council and the scientific advisory panel for the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and the independent science advisory panel for the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna. He has received the Volvo Environmental Prize, the American Fisheries Societies Award of Excellence and the American Institute of Fisheries Research Biologists Outstanding Achievement Award. He is a fellow of the Washington Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society of Canada and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Cadec, a Member of the European Parliament representing west France, will introduce Hilborn and moderate a question-and-answer session following Hilborn’s talk, which will focus on the European Union’s role in international governance and sound management of the world’s oceans.
