Aller Aqua-TripleNine marine ingredients collaboration yields “remarkable results”

A research collaboration established in August 2019 between Christiansfeld, Denmark-based Aller Aqua and marine ingredients producer TripleNine has yielded “remarkable results,” the companies announced this month.

Established to identify components of marine raw materials adept at benefitting fish health and growth performance, the joint effort involved Aller Aqua conducting feed trials on rainbow trout at its research facility utilizing functional marine ingredients produced by TripleNine, 999Vital.

“We appreciate that TripleNine, a well-known producer of marine ingredients, specializes in value-adding products," Aller Aqua Research and Development Director Hanno Slawski said. "The ones we have tested are nutritionally valuable fish feed ingredients, but using them as concentrated functional ingredients increase their impact. Our trials confirm this."

The fish were fed different test diets beginning with their first feeding after hatch and lasting until they reached fingerling size. According to Aller Aqua and TripleNine, the functional ingredients “led to positive effects on fish growth performance and health and provided excellent survival rates in the test groups," the companies said in the press release.

“We are very happy that the trials confirmed our intentions with 999Vital. Ensuring optimal efficiency by concentrating the functional ingredients ensures that we will contribute to heightening both performance and sustainability in the aquaculture sector," TripleNine Chief Commercial Officer Kenneth Storbank said. "We have a good collaboration with Aller Aqua, and it is a good way for us to get our products commercially tested and solidly documented."

Aller Aqua said that, in the future, 999Vital will serve as the functional ingredients in its starter feeds, with continuous testing planned to “evaluate effects in grow-out and broodstock stages of fish lifecycles for possible later application.”

At the heart of the research endeavor is sustainability and making the most of available resources, thus optimizing the aquaculture value chain, the companies said. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – particularly #12, Responsible Consumption and Production, and #14, Life Below Water – were considered when discussing marine raw materials for the trials. The marine materials used in the collaboration were locally produced, aligning with Aller Aqua’s policy of buying regional raw materials when feasible.

“999Vital has been deemed highly successful in terms of both performance and sustainability, and both Aller Aqua and TripleNine have benefitted from the trial cooperation,” the companies said.
