Indian meat retailer Nandu's expanding into fish and seafood sales

Bengaluru, India-based retailer Nandu’s has announced an expansion into sales of fish and seafood products.

Nandu’s has gained a strong growth in meat sales recently and is regarded as the largest hyperlocal and omnichannel meat retail company in India, according to BusinessWire India, which first reported the expansion.

Fish and seafood, which have been added to Nandu’s category of offerings on all of the company’s sales channels, include tilapia, prawn, crab, tuna, and black tiger shrimp, among others. The retailer said it will focus on delivering freshness and variety to its customers.

"After an extensive study of consumer preferences and availability of fish and seafood in the market, we offer our customers a wide variety of sea fish, river fish, shellfish, and dry fish. At Nandu’s, we will offer whole fish which will be hygienically cleaned and custom cut to suit the customer’s needs as well as pre-cut and packed fish and seafood for those who prefer to have it home delivered," Nandu's Head of Fresh Food Pramod Onkarappa said.

According to Nandu’s Chief Operating Officer Vinay Gopinath, since its launch in late 2016, the company has aimed to provide the market with fresh, healthy, and high-quality meat and meat products. But Gopinath said customers complained about how difficult it was for them to buy healthy and hygienic products, leading Nandu’s to expand into the fish and seafood category.

“With our foray into this segment, Nandu’s vision is to become India’s favorite neighborhood meat and fish brand, across online and offline retail channels. We are excited about this category and expect a significant revenue contribution from it,” Nandu’s Founder and CEO Narendra Pasuparthy said.

Nandu’s achieved growth of around 200 percent in financial year 2020-2021. It plans to attract private investments to expand to important markets such as Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and Kerala in the years to come. It hopes to operate 600 stores across India by 2025, Pasuparthy said.

Nandu’s currently has more than 50 stores across Bengaluru. The company also runs its own e-commerce website, app, call center, and online marketplaces.
