Sysco buys New York-based food distributor

Sysco’s purchase of J. Kings Food Service Professionals is the latest in a flurry of acquisitions for the global foodservice distributor in recent years.

Holtsville, New York, U.S.A.-based J. Kings, which has an estimated USD 150 million (EUR 135 million) in annual sales, services independent restaurant operators, institutions, retailers, and others in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

J. Kings was founded by John King more than 45 years ago. J. Kings’ executives, including founder and chief customer officer John King, will continue to manage the business.

“J. Kings is a well-respected, New York area broadline distributor, and we are happy to welcome them into the Sysco family of businesses,” said Greg Bertrand, executive vice president of U.S. foodservice operations. “As Sysco continues to focus on M&A as part of our strategic growth plan, we believe J. Kings, with its strong local presence, combined with Sysco’s scale and depth, will provide our customers with even more of what they need to be successful in the competitive New York-area market.”

In April, Sysco acquired J & M Wholesale Meats and Imperio Foods, Inc., leading California distributors with around USD 44 million (EUR 40 million) in combined annual sales.

Last December, it bought Kent Frozen Foods, a foodservice distributor in the United Kingdom, for an undisclosed sum. Kent Frozen Foods is headquartered in Kent, with distribution facilities in Aylesford, in Kent, and Witney, in Oxfordshire.
