Thai Union CEO to run in London Marathon to raise money for WWF-UK

Thiraphong Chansiri, CEO of Thai Union Group, will run in the Virgin London Marathon on 23 April 2017 to raise funds for WWF-UK.

Chansiri, a committed marathon runner, is aiming to raise a minimum of THB 90,000 (USD 2,628, EUR 2,472) in sponsorship from taking on the 26.2-mile route. In 2015, he successfully completed the Paris Marathon.

Thai Union has partnership agreements with WWF in a number of countries and is funding work to improve the operations of fisheries to protect stock levels, minimize the threat to endangered species and ensure full traceability of all the company’s seafood products. It is also currently working with WWF-UK to establish a tuna fishery improvement project (FIP) in the Indian Ocean.

“The work Thai Union is undertaking with WWF-UK is vital in securing the future health of the oceans and, over time, will inform the way the entire industry operates. I am deeply committed to our partnership with WWF-UK. Running the London Marathon has been one of my long-term ambitions, and I hope my efforts will help increase awareness of some of the key environmental issues that face our planet today,” said Chansiri.

In December, Thai Union announced a strategy to ensure 100 percent of its branded tuna is sustainably sourced with a commitment of achieving a minimum of 75 percent by 2020.

As part of its new tuna strategy, Thai Union is investing over THB 3 billion (USD 87.6 million, EUR 82.4 million) in initiatives that will increase the supply of sustainable tuna, which includes establishing 11 new FIPs around the world.
