More than 120,000 pounds of catfish – both wild and farmed – are being recalled in the United States due to lack of government inspections.
Earlier this month, City of Industry, California-based Richwell Group, Inc., doing business as Maxfield Seafood, recalled around 55,300 pounds of frozen Sheat catfish products that were not presented for import re-inspection into the U.S.
Several other importers have been forced to recall catfish recently for similar issues.
In one of two new recalls, issued on 22 February, Houston, Texas-based Fulton Seafood Inc. recalled around 100,924 pounds of wild catfish products that were not subject to federal inspection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in a press release.
The wild-caught catfish items, produced on various dates from 1 January through 21 February, were shipped to retail locations throughout Texas.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the products, FSIS said.
And TV Food in San Leandro, California, recalled approximately 27,956 pounds of Yellow Hito (catfish) products because the products were not presented for import re-inspection into the U.S.
They were shipped to a distributor in Chicago, along with other locations nationwide, FSIS said. There have been no adverse reactions to the products.
The recalled products from TV Food include:
- 14-ounce vacuum-packed trays containing “Golden Boy, FROZEN FISH CA DONG CA TRE DONG” and “Packed By: MAI SAO Seafood Co., LTD.” printed on the label.
- 14-ounce vacuum-packed trays containing “Golden Boy, FROZEN FISH STEAK CA TRE CAT KHUC” and “Packed By: MAI SAO Seafood Co., LTD.” printed on the label.
- 12-ounce vacuum-packed trays containing “Golden Boy, FROZEN FISH CA DONG CA TRE DONG LAM SACH KHONG DAU” and “Packed By: MAI SAO Seafood Co., LTD.” printed on the label.
- Two Fish/Bag Sold by weight vacuum-packed trays containing “Golden Boy, FROZEN FISH CA DONG CA TRE VANG LAM SACH KHONG DAU” and “Packed By: MAI SAO Seafood Co., LTD.” printed on the label.
- Three Fish/Bag, Sold by weight vacuum-packed trays containing “Golden Boy, FROZEN FISH CA DONG CA TRE VANG” and “Packed By: MAI SAO Seafood Co., LTD.” printed on the label.
- Two-pound vacuum-packed trays containing “Golden Boy” yellow catfish.
