12 contenders competing for World’s Best Lobster Roll title

The competition for world's best lobster roll is on.

Contenders are coming to Portland, Maine this summer to compete in the 2017 World’s Best Lobster Roll competition, according to the list of 12 semifinalists released by the event’s organizer Down East Magazine. The semifinalists hail from as far away as Los Angeles, California, and as close as Portland itself.

Slated to take place during the Lobster Roll Festival on Saturday, 8 July, 2017, at Portland’s outdoor arena on Thompson’s Point, the World’s Best Lobster Roll competition features contestants handpicked from dozens of entries by Down East, the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative and Ready Seafood, who are sponsoring the event, along with Maine’s Allagash Brewing Company.

The 12 semifinalists will first go claw-to-claw in a people’s choice semifinal round. Three remaining finalists will then be selected to move on to the main stage to vie for the ultimate distinction: the title of World’s Best Lobster Roll.

Every lobster roll created and consumed during the competition and festival, which costs USD 10 (EUR 8.90) for general admission, will raise USD 4 (EUR 3.50) for charity, noted Ready Seafood.

“So, the more we eat, the more we can support the industry that is so vital to our economy and way of life here in Maine,” according to Down East Magazine.
