The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) formally awarded two certifications to Singapore-based seafood wholesaler and processor Songlilai Trading Enterprise and Singapore-based sushi catering firm Junshin Sushi at Seafood Expo Asia, being held at the Sands Expo and Convention Center from 10 to 12 September.
Both companies were awarded with MSC Chain of Custody and ASC Chain of Custody certifications, which verify that products are traceable to either an MSC-certified fishery or an ASC-certified farm.
Songlilai Trading Enterprise Director Chris Tan said that the certifications offer key benefits to his company.
“Traceability is fundamental to our operation. Certification ensures product integrity, strengthens sustainability and food safety, helps prevent fraud, and builds trust. In the hospitality sector, this ability to guarantee sourcing and respond quickly to concerns is essential,” Tan said. “Certification helps us stand out in tenders and negotiations, especially with multinational hotel chains that prioritize sustainability. Our customers can be confident that the seafood they buy is traceable, responsibly sourced, and aligned with international standards. This helps them meet their own corporate sustainability goals and strengthens their brand image.”
Both certifications are administered by DNV, an independent assessment provider.
“With the MSC and ASC Chain of Custody certifications, Songlilai Trading Enterprise and Junshin Sushi have shown clear commitment to sustainable seafood sourcing and transparent supply chains," DNV Southeast Asia Area Manager Silas Ding said in a release about the news. "This positions them strongly in a market that increasingly values environmental responsible sourcing and trust.”
Both companies said that the certifications would make them more competitive in a market where customers are increasingly interested in working only with providers possessing certified sustainability and ethics credentials.
“We chose DNV for their strong reputation in seafood certification and sustainability," Tan said. "Their global expertise, transparent auditing, and practical guidance made the process constructive and aligned with our goals.”
