To better compete with Amazon’s AmazonFresh grocery delivery service in the United Kingdom, Tesco is extending its same-day online grocery delivery service across the U.K.
With the move, the supermarket chain becomes the first retailer in the country to offer nationwide same-day grocery delivery. AmazonFresh entered the U.K. market last year but its service is currently available only in London, Surrey, and parts of Hampshire. Meanwhile, Tesco launched its same-day grocery delivery service in London and Southeast England in 2014.
Now, it is extending the service to over 300 stores across the U.K., covering more than 99 percent of U.K. households. Tesco realized an 18 percent growth in demand for same-day delivery since the beginning of this year.
“Customers tell us they like getting their shopping delivered quickly and conveniently; and, with our same day delivery service, they can now order by lunch to get their shopping delivered for their evening meal,” said Adrian Letts, managing director of Tesco Online.
The new service is priced between GBP 3.00 (USD 3.91, EUR 3.36) and GBP 8.00 (USD 10.43, EUR 8.95). However, it is free for a limited time to members of Tesco’s online Delivery Saver program.
