UK fish and chip consumption gets a boost

The United Kingdom’s love of fish and chips is as strong as ever, with one quarter of the population naming it as their favorite takeaway meal, according to a new study commissioned by Young’s Seafood.

The leading seafood supplier to the U.K. market said 39 percent of the people surveyed agreed that a takeaway is their favored way to treat themselves, and also that 37 percent are creating healthy versions of the much-loved meal at home.

With 19 percent of the country eating a portion of fish and chips on a weekly basis, the country is now consuming 12.3 million portions every week.

Young’s believes the growth of at-home cooking could be explained by 41 percent of those asked saying they feel more confident in the kitchen than they did five years ago, thanks to the continued rise of celebrity chefs and food inspirations on social media.

Yvonne Adam, marketing director for Young’s, who commissioned the study to celebrate its 30-year-old Chip Shop range, said, “It’s great to see that fish and chips is still at the heart of the nation. Whilst it’s clear that we love treating ourselves to a takeaway, re-creating the delicious authentic taste of fish and chips at home has never been easier or healthier with the Young’s Chip Shop range. At just 2.3 percent saturated fat and 243 calories per portion you can enjoy the irresistible and authentic taste of your favorite takeaway at home.”
