Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.-based Harvest of the Sea has launched its Seafood Medley exclusively in Costco stores regionally.
“Costco’s scale and reach, of course, are unmatched and a successful launch at Costco equals welcome growth for all their suppliers,” Harvest of the Sea President and CEO Mark Shinbane told SeafoodSource.
The frozen 2.5-pound bags Seafood Medley bags include shrimp from Asia, Mexico, or South America combined with wild-caught calamari from India, Argentine scallops, and blue mussels from Prince Edward Island, Canada.
“[The] Seafood Medley was developed to bring together an ideal blend of the world’s highest quality seafood,” Shinbane said. “Traditional blends have often incorporated lower-quality, low-cost seafood, and our goal was to create a completely new version that elevates this dish to an entirely different medley experience.”
Costco is first rolling out the product in stores throughout the western U.S., including in San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles, California; along with stores in Arizona; Colorado; and Texas. The product’s rollout will move across the country in the coming months, Shinbane said.
Harvest of the Sea has seen significant growth over the past year, and the company “quickly increased our production to meet that demand,” Shinbane said.
“When people were faced with few to no options to dine out, they turned to creating more-interesting dishes at home. That generated a huge spike in the sales of frozen products – seafood, in particular – and what people discovered is that preparing delicious seafood can be easy and a great break from the usual fare,” Shinbane said. “We are confident that this trend is going to stick.”
As a result, the supplier plans to launch new products in the coming months, Shinbane said. In addition, Harvest of the Sea is working closely with restaurants to “customize new and interesting dishes that keep customers coming back for more,” Shinbane said.
“Combined with the surge of interest by retail consumers in quality frozen seafood, we expect this year and beyond to be one of solid expansion and innovation. Our launch of Seafood Medley is a big part of our focus on innovation and our strategic growth,” Shinbane said.
