Brazil acquisitions paying off for Nutreco

Dutch feed company Nutreco reported a favorable performance in 2015, boosted by the company’s Brazilian holdings.

The company had net revenues of EUR 5.7 billion (USD 6.5 billion) and operating profits of EUR 282 million (USD 319 million) in 2015, compared to 2014 revenues of EUR 5.4 billion (USD 6.1 billion) and profits of EUR 236 million (USD 267 million) in 2014. The company said results improved for all of its segments, which include animal nutrition, aquafeed and Nutreco Iberia, which focuses on Spain and Portugal. It also credited its 2014 purchases of two Brazilian animal nutrition companies: Fatec Industria de Nutrição e Saúde Animal, a supplier and producer of animal health products, and BRNova Sistemas Nutriconais S.A. a supplier of premixes and feed specialties.

“2015 was in many ways a special year for Nutreco,” Nutreco CEO Knut Nesse said. “The financial results were very good across all of our businesses. This confirms that we are increasingly successful in translating our R&D and innovation capabilities into sustainable nutritional solutions valued by our customers. With the acquisition of U.S.-based trace mineral producer Micronutrients, we realized the third-largest acquisition in our history, making Nutreco the category leader in a specific feed additive segment.”

Nutreco’s Skretting brand, which produces salmon feed for aquaculture, performed strongly in 2015, the company said, noting especially strong growth in its Ecuadorian shrimp feed business.

“[Skretting] maintained the position as global market leader, although there is still overcapacity in the main Norwegian market,” Nutreco’s annual report said.

Nutreco also reported progress its measurement, monitoring and development of controls around sustainability key performance indicators, such as CO2, water, waste, energy use and lost time incidents.
