Peter Pan exec chosen to chair ASMI board

The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute has tapped Barry Collier, CEO of Peter Pan Seafoods, to take over as the new board chair for the organization in a meeting held earlier this month in Juneau.

Ketchikan harvester Tomi Marsh also received a new appointment, that of vice chair of the board, at the beginning of May.

Both Collier and Marsh will play critical roles in providing strategic direction for the commodity marketing group alongside the rest of the ASMI board, a group comprised of four large processors, a small processor and two harvesters.

It’s customary for the board’s decisions to come down as unanimous, a tradition that isn’t likely to change as a result of these new assignments, according to ASMI’s Executive Director Michael Cerne.

"The board provides a strong overall strategic direction, and the staff execute it," said Cerne to The Bristol Bay Times.

Collier replaces Kevin Adams, a Bristol Bay fisherman, while Marsh steps in for Mark Palmer, the president of Ocean Beauty Seafoods.

After Collier and Marsh were appointed on 5 May, the board wasted no time in committing its resources to strengthening the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) program, a certification initiative built around the United Nations codes of conduct for responsible fisheries.

As of now, ASMI is up against a potential USD 2 million (EUR 1.8 million) cut in funding for 2016, granted the state budget gets greenlighted. Coincidentally, the seafood promotion group is looking to hone their marketing efforts as well as reduce administrative costs.

  • Kevin Adams, harvester
  • Mark Palmer, Ocean Beauty Seafoods
