Top global stories of 2014: Alibaba lobster sales, Thai Union buys Bumble Bee

10. Alibaba.com has made news in the mainstream media this year. The online retailer has been described as the Amazon.com of China, and its growth has spurred a new interest in online purchasing. In November Alibaba stunned the seafood industry by selling 90,000 Canadian lobsters in a single day. The move proved that nothing was out of reach of the Internet, and vast numbers of consumers are starting to get that.

It could be argued that the successful selloff was in part due to the assistance of the Canada’s trade office in China,  but it also serves as a reminder of the ever-growing appetite for seafood in China. Its economy may have slowed a bit, but demand for seafood there is still high, and China continues to be a major player in the world markets as a result.
