Vietnam ramps up seafood production

Vietnam produced close to 600,000 metric tons (MT) of seafood last month, an increase of 1.1 percent compared with September 2014, according to new data released by the country’s Directorate of Fisheries.

Capture fisheries contributed 284,000 MT to this total, an increase of 3 percent year-on-year, while aquaculture’s contribution totaled 315,000 MT, which was on par with a year ago.

For the nine months through September, the country’s seafood industry has produced 4.8 million MT of products, an increase of 2.8 percent year-on-year. This total comprised 2.3 million MT from capture fisheries and 2.5 million MT from aquaculture, representing increases of 4 percent and 2 percent respectively.

Pangasius and shrimp have continued to be the country’s main aquaculture products this year. In the first nine months of 2015, its pangasius production increased 10 percent year-on-year to 757,000 MT, while its black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) harvest grew 20 percent to 220,000 MT. Its whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) shrimp output, however, fell to 190,000 MT.
