Scottish salmon exports achieved their highest ever value of GBP 600 million (USD 834.3 million, EUR 675.8 million) in 2017, new government figures have shown. This total was 35 percent more than in 2016, while the volume shipped increased by 26 percent.
According to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the United States remained the largest overseas market for Scottish salmon with sales worth GBP 193 million (USD 268.4 million, EUR 217.4 million), followed by France with GBP 188 million (USD 261.4 million, EUR 211.7 million), China (GBP 69 million, USD 95.9 million, EUR 77.7 million) and the Republic of Ireland (GBP 34 million (USD 47.3 million, EUR 38.3 million).
Taiwan secured its place in the top five markets with sales worth GBP 16 million (USD 22.2 million, EUR 18 million), ahead of Germany, Poland, Canada, Belgium and the Netherlands, which make up the top 10 export destinations.
“The demand for Scottish salmon continues to grow in recognition of its taste, quality and provenance and these are key drivers for growth in the U.S., EU and Asian markets,” said Scott Landsburgh, chief executive of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO).
“This record-breaking export success of Scottish salmon is a trail-blazer for other Scottish food overseas and a further reminder of the importance of salmon to the Scottish economy and food and drink sector. Our achievement means that young people, communities and local suppliers also benefit from the economic success,” he said.
