Trident unveils retail, foodservice lines at SENA

Trident Seafoods, based in Seattle, Washington, is a major supplier of seafood caught in Alaska to restaurant chains such as McDonald’s, along with many national grocery chains in the United States. After its acquisition of Pickenpack Seafoods in Germany in early 2016, it is also supplying more Alaska pollock to the European market.

SeafoodSource recently talked with John Salle, vice president of marketing at Trident, about new product lines the company will be showcasing at Seafood Expo North America, taking place 19 to 21 March in Boston, Massachusetts, along with Trident’s other new ventures.

SeafoodSource: Which new products is Trident launching for retail?

Salle: Our Louis Kemp Hawaiian Poke Snackits officially launched in January, and will continue to be our focus and our launch in Boston. In fact, this item has been accepted and will be competing in the Seafood Excellence Awards, with judging taking place on Sunday, 19 March. On-trend in flavor and on-trend in convenience, Louis Kemp continues its long tradition of innovating in this category.

Trident is also launching an all-new product line called “Trident Signature.” As consumers gravitate toward the perimeter of the store looking for fresh prepared entrees, this new line will help retailers satisfy this demand. The product line ships frozen with repack labels and is intended to be sold refrigerated, either in the self-serve case, or under the glass. The new items launching in Boston include Encrusted Three Cheese Alaskan Pollock, Loaded Baked Potato Alaskan Pollock and Encrusted Spicy Asian Noodle Alaskan Pollock.

SeafoodSource: Which new foodservice offerings is Trident rolling out at Seafood Expo North America?

Salle: Wildly Simple Alaska Pollock Redi Cuts make it easy to add sustainable, wild-caught seafood from Alaska to any dish. These 0.36-ounce, diamond-shaped pieces cook from frozen in a skillet or stir fry in just minutes, significantly reducing prep time. Just portion, cook, and add to delicious pastas, rice dishes or fish tacos. The Wildly Simple Alaska Pollock Redi Cuts are cut from Alaska pollock fillets, which are made of whole-muscle fillets that have been deep-skinned for a whiter appearance. At SENA for the first time, Trident’s own chefs will be on display, showcasing just how easy it is to prepare a delicious Wild Alaskan Pollock Taco.

SeafoodSource: Because Trident is supplying so many processors, retailers and foodservice buyers, has the company had to expand production capability over the past year or so?

Salle: Our major value-added expansion occurred in the summer of 2015 with the opening of our Carrollton, Georgia, state-of-the-art processing facility. We are pleased to now be closer to our customers on the East Coast.

SeafoodSource: Has Trident expanded to new regions or countries recently?

Salle: Trident ships wild Alaskan Seafood to many countries worldwide. We are constantly looking for new markets, as well as bringing new products to existing markets. With our acquisition of Pickenpack Seafoods in Germany in early 2016, we are very proud to now be able to service many new customers in Europe with the finest value-added Alaskan pollock products.
