The green around the gills

We’re here today at the second and final day of Commercial Marine Expo in New Bedford, Mass., seeing lots of familiar faces and talking fish.

??If you can’t make it to the show, however, there is still a way for you to reach out to someone and talk fish.??

The Senate is in session this week, and they’re debating the farm bill. This may come as news to some folks, but there could be a tasty morsel in there for commercial fishermen.??

For decades, the federal government has offered low-interest loans to farmers for operational expenses like equipment, seed and fuel (capped at USD 300,000). An amendment to the new farm bill would make the same loans available for commercial fishing businesses.

??If you want to make sure fishermen have access to low-interest business loans, call your senator today and tell him or her you support the farm bill. And after you’ve done that, spread the word to your friends in every corner of the industry.

??The fishing industry has to come together on some issues. Make a phone call and do your part to make sure fishing businesses have the capital and cash flow to keep running.
