WWF Tosses Stinky Fish in the Gurry Bin

The World Wildlife Fund last week ended its anti-destructive fishing campaign fronted by the much-maligned mascot, Stinky Fish.

On WWF's Stinky Fish Web page, the puppet recounts its impact on consumers and the seafood industry before announcing that the downloadable video produced in January will not be re-released.

While Stinky Fish urged consumers to look for the Marine Stewardship Council's eco-label when making seafood purchases, the campaign was criticized in the seafood industry for spreading an anti-seafood message.

"So, I've decided not to re-release the video 'cause it's detracting from what is really important and what I'm trying to let you all know about, and that is: It's not the fish that stink, it's destructive fishing practices!" said Stinky Fish. "Choose seafood that's good for you and the oceans and look out for the MSC label. Thank you and farewell."
